What's On Your iPod?

May 17, 2011 by operationjack 7 Comments

This is probably the most embarrassing post I’ll ever make. But what the heck … I’ll do it. I’m going to tell you what I listen to when I run. But you have to tell me what you listen to. I can’t be the only one embarrassing myself!

I don’t listen to music when I run outdoors, but I have a playlist for the hamsterwhizzle (my name for the treadmill). I run for less than 40 minutes at a time on the hamsterwhizzle, but I listen to music. I listen to a wide variety of music. Here’s my playlist, in order: [Read more…]

One Thing I DON'T Miss About Last Year!

May 3, 2011 by operationjack 6 Comments

If you’ve never been here before, last year I ran 61 marathons and a couple of ultramarathons to raise money and awareness for Train 4 Autism. My middle child, 7 1/2-year-old Jack, is severely autistic so I did that in his honor and named it Operation Jack. Now four months into 2011, there are some things I kind of miss — the Biscoff cookies on Delta, meeting new people every weekend, having a slew of people tracking every step I run … there are some things I enjoyed. But one thing I don’t miss is not being around my family. I had to leave every weekend and while I got used to it, I sure don’t miss it.

I had an awesome weekend with my family and I was going to write a recap Sunday night for yesterday morning, but I was watching the news about Osama bin Laden and didn’t take the time to write anything. So, here goes.

Real quick, before I get rolling, we had a photo shoot for the kids on Friday evening and here’s one of the proofs we got back for Jack. LOVE IT!

We'll definitely be buying this one.

My Silly Wife

April 25, 2011 by operationjack 7 Comments

Ahhh, my silly wife. She’s so funny about some things. Well, especially my running. Like, when I wanted to run a 50-miler, she thought it was crazy, and it was too much, but then I did it. I was slower than I expected to be and out of cell phone range that day, so she freaked out when she didn’t hear from as soon as she thought she would. When I finally got a hold of her, she was pretty upset. I think she’d already written my eulogy. She gave me an earful for a good 30 minutes. But right after that, you know what she told everybody?

“Guess what my husband did! He ran 50 miles!”

Ahhh, women. As Norm Peterson said on Cheers, “you can’t live with ’em, … pass the beer nuts.”

Well, she did it again this weekend. I won’t lie. This Boston training cycle was a bit tough. I’m not the type of guy who misses family time to work out, but I’m pretty dedicated and focused when I’m attacking a training cycle. She didn’t hesitate to let me know that she wasn’t going to miss this training cycle. I’m up early in the morning, sometimes I fall asleep early at night, I’m pretty focused on my nutrition, I talk about the race a lot … enough’s enough. And then it was done. But not in her mind.

Easter is a holiday we spend with our family. It’s a reason to celebrate and give thanks. And I guess in her eyes, nothing says dessert on Easter like this:

Yeah, that's my Boston time on a Boston cream pie.

Three Things Thursday

February 17, 2011 by operationjack 1 Comment

It’s Thursday, so I’m copying my friend Jen Morgan with a Three Things Thursday blog. I’m not copying her three things, because she likes to talk about things like sports bras and her boyfriend, and it would be really weird for me to talk about sports bras and her boyfriend. But, I have three things nonetheless. [Read more…]
