It’s Thursday, so I’m copying my friend Jen Morgan with a Three Things Thursday blog. I’m not copying her three things, because she likes to talk about things like sports bras and her boyfriend, and it would be really weird for me to talk about sports bras and her boyfriend. But, I have three things nonetheless.
1. I might just be writing this to my wife, but if it’s really cold in the car, and you want it to warm up to 75 degrees, putting the heater on to 82 won’t make it warm up to 75 any faster. It will just keep the heater running longer. Same deal with the house. The same warm air is going to come from the heater. Or, if it’s warm and you want it to cool down to 72, setting the air conditioner to 65 won’t make colder air come from the AC. Yeah, my wife took my car to the gym this morning and set the heater to 82. I don’t think she really wanted it to be 82 in the car.
2. Speaking of my wife, she’s excited about The Real Housewives of Miami coming on soon. I really don’t get the fascination with these shows. I know they do well in the ratings and a lot of people watch the show, but I don’t get it. She gets all excited to watch rich women getting in arguments at dinners that only happen because they need everybody in the same room for the show. I don’t get it.
3. I really like what the Boston Marathon did to change the registration process for the 2012 and 2013 race. It sold out in eight hours and the bibs basically went to people who didn’t have computer troubles and had the time during the day to register (that includes me). With the new process, there are rolling registration dates for folks based on how much they exceed their qualifying time by. So, basically, in a race that’s geared towards the fastest recreational runners out there, the fastest people are going to get in first.
There are still a few flaws in the system. The qualifying times are a little easier for women than for men and people are a lot more likely to qualify 15-18 months prior to the race than within nine months of the race, so who knows what kind of shape runners will be in by race day? But it’s a step in the right direction, because it will do a better (but not flawless) job of making sure the fastest runners get in the race. I would have needed to aim for a 3:15:59 or better under the prior system to get in, but now I’m realistically going to need to go sub-3:05 to really assure myself a shot. It’s a challenge, but it’ll bring my best out of me.
OK, that’s all I’ve got. If you didn’t see the Valentine’s Day dinner my wife did for the kids, you have to check it out!
