Me Being Me

July 25, 2012 by operationjack 3 Comments

In three-plus years blogging and doing my thing trying to make things happen, I always wonder what approach I should take with my blogs. Should I talk about autism? Fundraising? Running? I try to reach both groups, but there’s not a whole lot of overlap. So last night, while I was thinking about what to write about, I figured, hmmmm, maybe I can just be Sam for a day and not be Operation Jack and just talk about what Sam’s up to. So what the heck, here goes, let’s see how this flies.

What You Can Learn About Me On Twitter

If you don’t follow me on Twitter, go here and follow me. I throw out so much useful information. Here are a few gems from last night:

There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can’t.
JH4DB2383NS003056. 1992 Acura Integra GS-R. And Princess was a doberman.
I like beer. But I go to extremes with anything I do. That’s why I’m glad I don’t drink any more. Rather than drinking 15 beers a day, I’m running 15 miles a day. Not sure which would be more damaging to my body long-term, though.

Home Alone … Somebody Help!

July 23, 2012 by operationjack 7 Comments

On paper, it sounds like a dream for a guy with three kids who’s been married for 13 years. I have two weeks home alone. It’s been five days so far. Tiff and the kids are back in California. I went with them, but came back because I have to work. They’re just having an extended summer vacation with the family.

So it seems like a great break for a guy. I don’t have to ask to go to the gym after work. I can leave my clothes on the ground for a few days and nobody complains. I don’t have to listen to the kids fight with each other. I don’t have to worry about Tiff drinking all the coffee. I also don’t have to worry about her putting my favorite water cup in the sink and I can re-use it over and over. I can go to bed however early I want without waiting for her Real Housewives of Wherever to end.

I don’t have to turn off the baseball game so the kids can watch some cartoon instead.

But I’ve learned a few things. [Read more…]

Guest Post: Fighting Cystic Fibrosis

July 19, 2012 by operationjack 1 Comment

Last Thursday, I had a contest to give out a $250 grant and Danielle Sterling won for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of New England. I asked her to write a guest blog about her cause. So today, I’m turning it over to Danielle so she give y’all the details of another great cause that Operation Jack is supporting. Have a great weekend!

Aaron and Danielle.

My name is Danielle Sterling and I am a Registered Respiratory Therapist at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine. After graduating from college in 2003, I did social work/therapy with teenagers in the juvenile justice system and in 2006, started taking classes while awaiting acceptance into nursing school. Shortly after starting school (quite literally a week into it), I met my future husband, Tyler, and later on down the road I met his family. Specifically, his brother, Aaron. I learned he had a lung disease called “Cystic Fibrosis”, and had undergone a double lung transplant in 2003. Ty had already told me about the transplant but the whole story became complete once I met Aaron. The only thing I had ever known about CF was that a friend of mine growing up had lost her best friend to the disease when we were in grade school. Now it became all too real for me as well as I continued to get closer to the Sterling family.

Aaron was born with CF, but was not diagnosed until the first few months of life. The doctors told his parents he most likely would not make it to attend school. He was in and out of the hospital throughout his childhood for this treatment and that treatment, which is the norm for kids with this disease. Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive disease where thick, sticky mucus builds up in the lungs. Over time the body just cannot absorb the mucus and it takes over the areas where oxygenation and gas exchange takes place. This causes infection in those areas, and essentially the lungs become unusable. Early detection of this genetic disease is essential in order to start on proper medications, and in the state of Maine it was recently made a law that every baby born is tested before they leave the hospital. Both the mother and father must be a carrier of the CF gene in order to have the 25% chance of their unborn child to have CF, so you can also get tested before having a baby as well. [Read more…]

Wordless Wednesday: A Face Of Autism

July 18, 2012 by operationjack 5 Comments

Technically, this isn’t going to be wordless, but the pictures will do a million times more talking than the sentences I’m going to write. I’m posting two pictures of my son Jack, who is my inspiration for Operation Jack. He is severely autistic, nearly 9 years old with limited speech and still in diapers. Since he can’t really talk, he gets upset over his frequent stomach pain and when he gets frustrated about not being able to communicate that to us, he hits himself in the head. We put him in a padded helmet for his own protection, but sometimes he finds ways around it to still punch himself in the head.

He’s a really cute kid. And a really sweet kid. Everybody tries to be nice and positive with us, to find a bright side to what he goes through. In response to his inability to communicate and his abnormal behaviors, a lot of times we hear, “Well, as long as he’s happy … ”

As I was telling my wife Tiffany yesterday, I won’t accept that he’s happy until he tells us he’s happy.

My precious Jack.

Guest post: My 5th Badwater 135

July 16, 2012 by operationjack Leave a Comment

Today, I have a guest post from a friend of mine, Jonathan Gunderson. I wrote about him last week because he inspires the heck out of me. Today, he’s running the Badwater Ultramarathon for the 5th time. He’s an incredibly tough runner and a great, great person. I’m pretty honored to have a guest post from him today.

He has a site, seegundyrun.com, and he raises money through World Harvest Mission to build wells in Uganda, bringing clean water to villages desperately in need. The next time you’re thirsty and you get yourself a glass of water, be grateful you’re not having to get it from a muddy river! [Read more…]
