In three-plus years blogging and doing my thing trying to make things happen, I always wonder what approach I should take with my blogs. Should I talk about autism? Fundraising? Running? I try to reach both groups, but there’s not a whole lot of overlap. So last night, while I was thinking about what to write about, I figured, hmmmm, maybe I can just be Sam for a day and not be Operation Jack and just talk about what Sam’s up to. So what the heck, here goes, let’s see how this flies.
What You Can Learn About Me On Twitter
If you don’t follow me on Twitter, go here and follow me. I throw out so much useful information. Here are a few gems from last night:
Still Home Alone
As I wrote on Monday, I’m home alone. My wife and kids are in California. This is tough work, taking care of myself. Well, I’m not really taking care of myself, because Tiff made me a dozen meals and froze them, so I’m just thawing one in the morning and eating well in the evening. But before I ate my dinner last night, stopped off at Costco to pick up food, then I emptied the dishwasher, did dishes and loaded the dishwasher, started the dryer, made my lunch for tomorrow, made a gatorade and protein shake for tomorrow, let the dog out, got the coffee ready for the morning and cleaned off the counter. Then I finally ate my dinner.
Then I folded the laundry in the dryer, which was done. But on the bright side, I can do things like leave cans of food from Costco on the island in the kitchen and not put them away, because there’s nobody here to yell at me about that.
Six more days until I have to put those cans in the pantry. I can’t wait!
I like To Run!
So, I’m on a bit of a roll lately and I’m really starting to enjoy running again. I think the key for me is just logging lots of slow miles. Slow is all relative, but for me, running 12+ miles in the 8:40s out on my trails is the way I like to start my day. Quiet time, nice and peaceful, plus even though I’m not running at a high intensity, I know I’m getting a bit of a workout. Today I actually felt like giving it a moderate effort and I hit my 14 at an 8:04/mile pace. Felt nice to give a bit of a push.
Since I’m home alone, I can go to the gym after work and I like to get about 4-6 miles in on the treadmill. I do a progressive run and bump the speed from 7.0 up to about 9.0. It’s fun for me to spin the wheels a little bit and for some reason, this seems to be working well as a recovery run.
So, I’m on a run streak right now. I’m at 28 straight days after going 14 miles this morning, averaging 14.63 miles per day (although that will jump to 14.78 if I run 4 tonight at the gym after work). I’m feeling great and having fun, and really, if you can’t have fun with your hobby, what’s the point?
I’m training for a marathon in Idaho on September 1 and I’m pretty encouraged with how my fitness is progressing.
That’s All
I’m out of time. Did you ever name your car after a pop star’s dog? Do you take anything to extremes? Would you rather see me write about autism or running? Or should I just post screen caps from my timeline?
Have a great Wednesday y’all. Oh yeah, wish me luck. I have to go to court for a speeding ticket this morning. We’ll see how that goes.

Did you make the bed and also fold up your clothes and put them away? Just checking…

It’s not a whole VIN (wow!!), but I still remember the license plate number of a guy’s truck that we saw on the freeway when I was 12. He was punching — yes, punching — a boy as they stood outside the truck, and I remembered the license plate number while my mom drove to the police station to tell them, since this was long before we had a cell phone.
