I had such a great nutrition day yesterday, I felt like I had to share the details here today. But first, I have to wish my wife Tiffany a happy 12th anniversary. Since I’m going to talk about food, I always joke that the most expensive meal I ever had was my lunch on May 23, 1999 — it cost me the rest of my life! But really, I’m madly in love with her and as difficult as our life is, I am grateful every day to have her as a partner. She’s my best friend and I’ll never be too macho to admit that.
Anyways, I said I was going to talk about food … I had the most incredible day from start to finish yesterday.
For breakfast, it was my Sunday tradition — two maple old-fashioned donuts at church. As I write this and think about the donuts, a tooth on the bottom of my mouth is stinging a little bit, probably from subconsciously thinking about those donuts. I like the oatmeal I have for breakfast six days a week. But those donuts, man I love those donuts. It’s just not Sunday without them. Sometimes last year, Tiff would bring them back when I was out of town and I’d get them for breakfast on Monday. Whatever the case, I had them yesterday.
So the next meal of the day is lunch. If you haven’t followed me for that long, check this link out … I LOVE In-N-Out. Best cheeseburger anywhere. Spare me your Five Guys comments. I took Benjamin and Ava there for lunch and I was in hog heaven. They were too, of course. Double-double animal, add mustard, add regular onions, fries well. Lunch of a champion.
For dinner, Tiff and I went to a retirement dinner for a college professor who was the advisor of the college newspaper we met each other on. It was at a Mexican restaurant, so I had chips and salsa, a taco, an enchilada, a chile relleno and rice and beans. I love Mexican food and it was a great cap to a great day of eating.
But wait … there’s more! I had a dish of cookies and cream ice cream as a snack between lunch and dinner. A lot of you know how much I love ice cream — I had it 166 consecutive days at one point last year. At dinner, they brought dessert. Normally at a Mexican restaurant, you get flan or something like that. But they brought out vanilla ice cream drizzled with whipped cream and caramel! BONUS!
They did a toast and since I didn’t have a drink, I toasted with my ice cream dish. It was one of those dishes that’s v-shaped, fairly narrow and somewhat tall, so it worked to toast with. You don’t get a lot of opportunities to toast with ice cream, so when you get that chance, you take it!
But wait, there’s more! Tiff didn’t want her ice cream! So, I got hers. Three dishes of ice cream in one day. Does it get any better than that?
Well, we got home and went up to bed and Tiff wanted ice cream. So, she told me to grab a dish so she wouldn’t be eating by herself. She certainly didn’t have to ask me twice. Cookies and cream again. One day. Four dishes. Plus the donuts, Mexican food and In-N-Out. What a day.
But the most critical part of yesterday was today. The weigh-in! After my run yesterday, I weighed 199.5. It was a 26.25-miler, so typically I gain a few pounds over 24 hours from rehydrating. Today, after my run, I weighed 199.5. Maybe I should do this every day?
I don’t know the science behind all of this. All I know is what works for me. And for me, apparently donuts, In-N-Out, Mexican food and four dishes of ice cream works!
