When Wildfires Hit Close To Home

June 28, 2012 by operationjack 1 Comment

New state, same natural disaster.

I thought I escaped wildfires when I moved out to Colorado with my family in March from Southern California. It seemed like there were catastrophic fires every year there. Sometimes, they’d get close enough that we’d have ash falling on our car. In 1993, I remember seeing the Laguna Fire creep over the mountains from where I went to school in Mission Viejo.

I never worried. I trusted firefighters. I just “knew” that everything would be fine. All that changed with the Santiago Fire in 2007. In hindsight, the fires that hit Southern California in 2007 are a blur. I know the worst was down in the San Diego area. I know there was the Santiago Fire up by us. I don’t remember if there were any others. I’ll never forget our experience, though.

It started as a fairly standard fire. That sounds bad, but in California, you get used to things like fires and earthquakes. There’s smoke in the sky. There’s news broadcasts. Everybody panics … well, except for me. I never worried about anything. [Read more…]

Wordless Wednesday

June 27, 2012 by operationjack 1 Comment

Well, almost wordless. Can’t believe I became a dad 11 years ago today. Can’t believe how fast these years go by.

My little baby!

He likes roller coasters, so I took the day off of work today and we’re going to an amusement park down in Denver. Hope you have a good Wednesday, but it won’t be as good as ours.

Is this winning or losing?

June 26, 2012 by operationjack 2 Comments

Oh. My. Goodness. I’m doing this Biggest Loser competition at work and I HATE IT! And I hate my wife even more! She’s making me win! I’m down maybe 7.5 pounds in the past three weeks and … urrrrgggghhhh, this is killing me! I mean, it’s great, because I’ve wanted to lose weight for a while, but. Stop. Now!

I’ve always hovered right around 203 since I ran my first marathon six years ago. Even as I’ve gotten faster and fitter, I’ve stayed right there, never really leaving the 198-208 window. I know I could lose a little bit of garbage weight and not look scrawny. I’d be pretty fast at 190 — every pound is supposed to be two seconds per mile and I’d love to run 12 pounds lighter than when I ran my PR marathon last year at 202. Heck, I’d love to weigh 185. 6-1 (or 6-2, depending on my shoes), 185, that’s not too skinny, right? I haven’t been able to get there, but I haven’t really cared.

My attitude has always been that if I’m going to run 10 or 12 miles in the morning, I’ll eat as many cookies as I want. But now that it’s a competition, I want to win. And Tiff wants me to win even more. I’m not sure if it’s because she thinks I’d look better minus a sack of potatoes or if she wants me to win the prize, although I’m pretty sure it’s both.

She’s competing vicariously through me and somebody needs to shoot me! Or her!

Last night, I was texting a friend, having a serious conversation, and I wrote, in response to nothing, …

“I want to eat a couch!” [Read more…]

Three Things Thursday: Best Picture EVER!

June 21, 2012 by operationjack 3 Comments

Three things Thursday, here we go. I’m gonna time myself and see if I can get this written in less than 10 minutes.

1. Jack (my severely autistic 8-year-old son, in case you’ve never been here) loves playing with Tiff’s iPhone. He’ll snag it and play with the camera any chance he gets. Occasionally, he’ll fire off texts without really knowing it. Sometimes, he’ll include pictures in those texts. Yesterday, he sent the best picture ever to our landlord. Now, you can obviously see the picture before you finish reading these sentences. But clear your mind for just a minute and imagine you’re our landlord. You get a text from one of your tenants. You see it includes a picture. You open it up and this is all you see. If you’re not laughing, you have no sense of humor!

I’m watching you!

2. We’re doing the Biggest Loser at work. I know I’ve mentioned that a few times here and I’ll keep mentioning it, probably in my three things Thursday. I’m not really sure what my starting weight was. I weighed in at 207, but I didn’t exercise that morning, so I guess it was 205? Well I like to win, plus I’ve always wanted to get rid of a little bit of garbage weight I’ve been carrying around, so this is the perfect opportunity. This morning I was at 198 through 17 days of the competition. I’ve lost weight before, and this is where I normally plateau. So we’ll see how it goes. I’d love to get down to 190.

3. On Sunday night at dinner, Ava, my 6-year-old daughter, shot me a random question, which is what 6-year-olds do.

“Who do you think is the best cook in the world?” I threw it back at her, expecting her to say my wife. Sure enough, “Mommy!” And she has a point. Tiff is a heck of a cook. Then she followed up with, “Who do you think is the worst cook in the world?” I was kind of thinking she was going to say my mother-in-law, because she sometimes makes some fairly bland food. But she threw me a curveball.

“You are, Daddy!” Aw shucks, thanks kid. She might be right, although I think I make a pretty good grilled cheese sandwich and I can put together a decent quesadilla. I also make my oatmeal in the morning.

OK, I’ve counted to three. I’ve fulfilled my obligation. It took me 11 minutes, though.

Have you ever sent a bad accidental text or email? Are you a better cook than me?

Wordless Wednesday: Happy Birthday, Josh!

June 20, 2012 by operationjack Leave a Comment

So I’m going to be almost wordless, but I’m going to throw in a few words because the subject deserves it. The pictures are of my brother. It’s his birthday today, so I’m throwing in some pictures of him while wishing him a happy birthday. 36!

A few things about him:

– He’s cheated death a few times and I’m grateful he’s still around. Ridiculous car accident, extracted with jaws of life. Face down with a gun to his head in an armed robbery. God’s been taking care of him.

– He’s fiercely loyal to the family and is a great uncle to my kids. I know if something happened to me tomorrow, he’d make sure Tiff and the kids are taken care of as long as he lives.

– He has a super, super, super, super soft spot for Jack (my 8-1/2-year old, severely autistic son, if you’ve never been here before). He was very supportive of what I tried to accomplish in 2010.

– Everybody who walks this earth has their flaws and imperfections. I do, you do, he does. But he’s a good person and I’m proud to call him my brother.

That’s all for today … have a great Wednesday.
