You Never Know When You'll Make A Difference

August 8, 2012 by operationjack 4 Comments

Over the weekend, my wife Tiffany was talking to the woman who was Jack’s special ed teacher for close to two years back in California until we moved out here to Colorado. Real quick, if you don’t know who Jack is or why this site is called Operation Jack, click here. In a nutshell, he’s my son, six weeks shy of turning 9, and still in diapers and not talking due to the severe autism he struggles with.

Anywayws, Tiff was talking to the teacher and catching up on a whole host of things. To know Jack is to love him — he’s one of the sweetest kids you’ll ever meet. He struggles a lot, which is pretty painful from a parent’s perspective. It can be pretty frustrating, too — he has constant meltdowns and as much as you want to help him, you don’t necessarily know what’s bothering him. When you can’t solve it or get him to understand that you’re trying to help him, his frustration grows and his only way to express himself often becomes self-injuring behavior. We never go anywhere without his padded helmet.

Back to the original point, though — he’s a very, very sweet and lovable little boy. Everybody who gets to know him falls in love. He’s the most pure 8-year-old I’ve ever met and just about everybody who meets him feels the same. So Tiff and the teacher were catching up, talking about Jack’s progress and how he’s adjusting to Colorado. Like everybody who had a part in his life in California, she really misses him. Finally, My Life As I Remember It!

August 7, 2012 by operationjack 1 Comment

Cue Joni Mitchell, Amy Grant, Counting Crows, whoever … Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone …

I picked up my oldest son Benjamin from the airport last night. I can’t believe how much I missed him! I hadn’t seen him in 20 days, since I came back from California after a quick trip out there last month. My wife Tiffany stayed out there with the kids for a couple of weeks after I returned to Colorado (I had to work) and Ben stayed back an extra week to hang out with his grandparents and go to camp at our old church.

I don’t talk about him a whole lot here. I talk more about Jack, because he’s really the only reason I’m public about anything. But I do have two other children besides Jack. Benjamin is a really good kid with a huge heart. I’m really proud of the little guy he’s turning into. He’s a really good person, and that’s going to get him a long ways. We can get along really well and I really enjoy it when we do. However, we have a tendency to butt heads and argue. It’s just the way our personalities are and working with him better is always one of my biggest goals as a parent.

I really missed the good and the bad from him, though. Raising three kids (including one with special needs) and going through the daily grind in this difficult economy is exhausting, to say the least. But it’s what I wanted, it’s what I signed up for and it’s the whole “life” thing I’m grateful for every day. I missed having him around, and I’ll probably roll my eyes if (when?) he misbehaves during dinner tonight, but I wouldn’t trade the chaos for anything. And I really hope I don’t have to go 20 days without seeing him again while he’s young. I really missed him.

It’s making me smile just knowing he’s upstairs asleep in our house right now. I love that little guy and I’m so glad he’s back! For the first time in close to four weeks, my family of five is together again under the same roof. That’s pretty much all I need.

Quick Week/Weekend Recap:

Season passes to the zoo were the best $130 we ever spent. On Saturday, around lunch time, we were thinking of things to do with Jack and Ava. So we loaded up a bag with waters and snacks and drove all of 20 minutes down to the Denver Zoo. Jack only lasted a little less than two hours, but it was nice. It’s pretty chill to just head down, walk around and look at animals for a little while, then head back. We spent a grand total of $3 on popcorn and basically went to a really cool park. Can’t beat that!

Us at the zoo. Minus Ben, because he was in California. Tiff put this photo through Instagram. Not really my thing. I think I’m the last person out there still not on Instagram.

Three Things Thursday: Check Out This Bay Area Race!

August 2, 2012 by operationjack 2 Comments

OK, three things Thursday, here we go. Not much blogging from me this week — I’ve been busy getting back into my routine now that my wife and two of my three kids are back in town. But hey, here we go. I can count to three.

1. Check out THIS RACE that my friend Jonathan Gunderson is putting on in San Francisco on September 8. I’ve mentioned him here before and even had a guest post from him. He’s an amazing ultrarunner doing amazing things and I’m glad to have the ability to help him out. He’s putting on this race, only a 10K/6K trail race so it’s easy to complete even if you’re not a marathoner. It’s going to benefit the World Harvest Mission and raise money to build wells for villages in Uganda that need them. I’m trying to get out there to run it or help him with it, but I’m at the very least going to be making a decent donation from my foundation. He’s the kind of guy I like to help and I’m glad I have the ability to do so.

If you’re in the Bay Area, PLEASE consider this race. It’s easy, it’s very affordable, and it benefits a GREAT cause. If you’re not in the Bay Area, can you please at least send this out on Twitter or Facebook and hopefully catch the attention of those who are? THANK YOU!!!

2. So as I mentioned here on Monday, I set a new personal best last week running 130 miles. This week, life is getting in the way. As much as I try to stay focused when I’m training for a goal race (which I have on September 1), I always try to make sure that I prioritize life ahead of running. Well, this week, life has certainly gotten in the way, and my running has taken a hit. I’m at 24 miles for the week and will be lucky to hit 70. Two times Tiff has needed my help with Jack. This morning, I chose not to run because Tiff wanted to go to the gym and I felt like she really needed to go for peace of mind. She actually ended up failing to set her alarm clock, so I didn’t run when I could have, but oh well. If my race comes down to one or two missed runs, then I wasn’t ready enough anyways. Right?

3. Had a fun time last night at the Cardinals-Rockies game last night with my daughter and a friend of mine. Cardinals outfielder/second baseman Skip Schumaker is a family friend and me and the kids like watching them play. Ava had never gotten a chance to meet him, but she did before last night’s game and thought it was pretty cool. And the Cards won, which was also pretty cool. On the way home, she was actually talking more about how far Matt Holliday’s second home run travelled than meeting Skip. I love the thought that I’m raising some little baseball fans!

Skip and Ava before the game.

That’s all for today. If you’ve never been here, CLICK HERE to see what Operation Jack is all about. Hint: It’s not just a blog about running and baseball. What’s your favorite baseball team? How do you manage your life/running balance if you’re a runner? Any chance I’m going to see you at the race on September 8?

Getting My Chaos Back!

July 30, 2012 by operationjack 3 Comments

If you’ve been along for the ride here lately, you know I’ve been home alone for close to two weeks and I’m LOSING MY MIND! I’m so bored and lonely and pretty much miserable. My wife and kids are in California visiting our family and having a bit of a summer vacation. I have that “work” think, so I’m here in Colorado. But tonight! I’m going to the airport! I’m getting my chaos back! Oh, and I have an update on Jack and a running update. Jack ended up having a good week. I did too and I’m surprised my legs didn’t fall off.

Bachelor No More!

So tonight at 8:25, my wife and two of my kids, Jack and Ava, are getting back to Colorado! (Benjamin is hanging out with my parents and in-laws for another week) But I guess I’m still kind of a bachelor until tonight. Yesterday I had to make my lunch for today. I had to make the coffee and my breakfast this morning. I don’t have to ask for permission to go to the gym after work tonight. I didn’t need to tiptoe around while getting ready for my run this morning. I set out the last of the 12 frozen meals Tiff made for me before going to California so that it would thaw by dinner time tonight.

It kind of sounds like a dream for a guy — no wife nagging, no kids fighting, nobody preventing a nap. But I hate being alone and I get lonely and depressed so I’m looking forward to getting back into my chaotic routine. If I didn’t want all the commotion and surprises that come with getting married and having kids, I wouldn’t have gotten married or had kids! [Read more…]

Why I Hate Plea Bargains

July 26, 2012 by operationjack 2 Comments

I think I can safely say that this is the first time I’ve ever done what I’m doing now. I’m writing my blog while behind the wheel of my car on a highway. I got stuck in the worst traffic jam I’ve ever been in on my way home yesterday, so I decided to start writing my blog from the car. Don’t worry, I was in park. And it’s pretty ironic to be doing this, considering I went to court Wednesday for a moving violation!

Boom, smooth transition!

Kangaroo Court?

I got a ticket in Boulder on June 8 for 61 in a 45, but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t doing that. I won’t get into all the details and bore you, but I’m going to fight this. In this country, you (sort of) have a right to a trial. I at least want to tell my side of the story to the judge. But the court doesn’t want me to. Why do I say that?

First, it’s $25 in court fees if I lose or plead guilty before trial.

I wanted to know the evidence against me, because it wasn’t clear to me how the officer got my speed. The fine on the ticket said $125, but if I go to court and lose, I have to pay $25 in court fees. There was something on the ticket that said bond was $300 so I called and asked if that’s what my fine was going to be if I lost in court. Was I really looking at $325?

— note: I’m not behind the wheel any more … I stopped writing when I took my car out of park — [Read more…]
